Roulette is a very simple game to learn and play. The object of the game is to predict the outcome of the ball (i.e. where the ball will land on the wheel) and make a winning wager based on your prediction. The attraction of Roulette is the fact that you can win a lot of money from a small bet. Roulette is clearly a game of chance. So, you really don't require any skill and neither do you need to learn anything, except the Bet Types. So let's dig deeper into the Roulette variations and Bet Types.

There are two main variations to Roulette - American Roulette and European Roulette. Each type of Roulette has different types of wheels. The American Roulette Wheel has 38 slots which contain 36 numbers as well as a single zero and a double zero while the European Roulette Wheel has 37 slots which contain 36 numbers and a single zero. If you're serious about playing Roulette, then you stand a better chance of winning by playing the single zero version. Why? Because the house edge on the single zero version is 2.70% while the house edge on the double zero version is a whopping 5.26%! Now, that's quite a difference when you're merely betting on chance.

You can make several different types of bets on Roulette including:

Outside Bets

All outside bets on the far outside pay back even money. If, for example, you bet on 1 to 18, all you're doing is betting that the next number that the ball will fall on will be any number from 1 to 18. By covering 18 numbers on the Roulette table, your payoff will be even money. Similarly, if you bet on Even, you're betting that the next number that the ball will fall on will be an even number. There are 18 even numbers on the Roulette wheel and Roulette table, so, again, your payoff will be even money. The same applies to the other Outside bets on Red, Black, Odd, and 19 to 36. All these Outside bets consist of wagering on 18 numbers. Therefore, the payoff will be even money on all Outside bets.

Other outside bets include bets on the 1st 12, bets on the 2nd 12, and bets on the 3rd 12. Each section contains 12 numbers. So, if, for e.g., you place a bet on the 1st 12, you are betting that the next number that the ball will fall on will be any number from 1 to 12. Similarly, if you bet on the 2nd 12, you are betting that the ball will fall on any number from 13 to 24. And bets on the 3rd 12 mean that you are betting that the ball will fall on any number from 25 to 36. All these bets constitute 12 numbers. By covering 12 numbers on the Roulette table, your payoff will be 2:1.

You can also bet on the Outside Bets labelled 2 to 1. These are also known as Column Bets because you will be paid out if the ball lands on any one of the numbers in the 2 to 1 column where your bet was placed.

Inside Bets

If you bet on any of the numbers themselves, you are placing an Inside bet. Betting on any labelled number is placing an Inside Bet. There are several ways to make and Inside or Straight Up bet. You may place a bet directly on any one number. This means that you are betting that the ball will land on that specific number. If it doesn't, you lose your bet. If it does, however, your payoff is a whopping 35:1! Now, you can understand why players in a land-based casino get so excited when they win a Straight Up bet because it means a handsome payoff PLUS additional comps that the casino might throw in to appease the player into continuing to wager and not cash out.

Another type of Inside bet is the Split Bet. When placing a Split bet, you are betting on 2 numbers. The chip is placed on the line dividing the 2 numbers. For e.g., if you place your chip on the line between the numbers 31 and 34, you are betting that on the next spin of the wheel, the ball will land on either 31 or 34. If it lands on either one of those 2 numbers, your payoff is 17:1, which is half the payoff of a Straight Up bet.

You can also bet on 3 numbers at the same time using one chip. This is called a Line bet. To accomplish this, you would place your chip on the far line of the highest number in the row. For example, if you wanted to bet on the numbers 34, 35, and 36 all at once using one chip, you would place the chip on the outside line on your side by the number 34. This will cover the 3 numbers in that row. If the ball lands on any of those 3 numbers on the next spin of the wheel, your payoff will be 11:1.

Corner bets are another common type of Inside Bet and allow you to wager on 4 numbers at the same time using 1 chip. You can do this by placing the chip on the intersection of all 4 numbers. For example, if you wanted to bet on the numbers 31, 32, 34, and 35, you would place the chip on the intersection of these numbers. This means that all 4 numbers will be covered by that single bet. If the ball lands on any one of those 4 numbers on the next spin of the wheel, your payoff will be 8:1.

Finally, you can place an Inside bet on 6 numbers all at once. This is called a 6 Number Bet.You would place your chip on the intersecting line of all 6 numbers. For e.g., if you wanted to place a bet on the numbers 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36, you would place your chip on the intersecting line between 28 and 31. This would cover 2 rows of the 3 numbers. If the ball lands on any of the 6 numbers on the next spin of the wheel, your payoff will be 5:1.

If you happen to be privy to a real live Roulette game, you would notice that the most popular number (i.e. the one that is bet on the most during any given game) is 17. Why? There are a couple of reasons why 17 is so popular. The first reason has to do with the table layout. The number 17 appears to be dead centre on the table layout and, consequently, the most visible. Another reason is largely due to James Bond, believe it or not. Bond bet the number 17 in his movies and, since Lady Luck seemed to be always on his side, real live Roulette players started using this as a measure of their success.

There are tons of Roulette strategy software programs available online today. It really isn't logical, however, to assume that these strategies will guarantee that you will win big while playing Roulette. They may help you to recoup some of your losses by maximizing bet amounts on specific bet types, but there are no fool-proof methods of ensuring a large win each time you play. If you think about it, can you pre-determine where the ball will land on a random spin of the wheel? No, you can't. So, instead of wasting time and money using roulette strategy tools, K.I.S.S. instead. By keeping it simple, we mean, to always be mindful that Roulette is 1% strategy and 99% plain luck.

RECOMMENDATIONS: It is important to remember that European (i.e. French or Single Zero) Roulette carry a lower house edge (2.6%) than that of American Roulette (5.27%). You stand a better chance of winning or having fun by playing longer, if you stick with European Roulette. HOWEVER, if by chance you find yourself playing American Roulette, and you have at least $20 in pending bets, place an additional $1 Split bet on 0 (Zero) and 00 (Double Zero). This is like betting on any 2 numbers and if the 0 or 00 comes up on the next spin of the wheel, you will receive a 17:1 payoff for that bet. This will help recoup some of your losses on the other bets you would have had on the table.
